Give the recruiter a clear outline

A phone screen may cover relevant experience, why you applied and practical questions about the role. The exact agenda varies, so use the invitation and vacancy to prepare. Have a concise introduction ready and know which parts of your experience best match the job. You can go deeper when the recruiter asks.

Keep a small set of prompts nearby

  • A short introduction and two relevant examples.
  • Your reason for applying to this role and employer.
  • Accurate availability and any work arrangements you need to discuss.
  • Questions about the responsibilities and what comes next.

Put this answer into your own words

Could you briefly walk me through your background?

  1. Choose an example from your own experience and jot down three or four reminders.
  2. Record your answer in one take. Listen for the main point, what you did and what happened.
  3. Improve the part that was hardest to follow, then say the answer again.
