Interview advice

How to sell yourself in an interview without overdoing it

You do not have to boast to make a strong case. Show what you can do through a specific example, explain your part and connect it to the job.

Replace a claim with a piece of evidence

You do not need a louder personality to explain your value. Instead of saying you are an excellent communicator, describe a time you helped someone understand a difficult issue. Instead of saying you are a natural leader, show how you helped a group make progress. Let the listener see the skill in the example.

Make your part clear

  • Choose a strength that matters for this job.
  • Use “I” for the decisions and actions you owned, and “we” for work you shared with others.
  • Describe the result accurately; explain the observation if you do not have a number.
  • Connect the example to the responsibility you would take on in the new role.

Put this answer into your own words

Why should we hire you?

  1. Choose an example from your own experience and jot down three or four reminders.
  2. Record your answer in one take. Listen for the main point, what you did and what happened.
  3. Improve the part that was hardest to follow, then say the answer again.
