Interview advice

How to get better at interviews, one answer at a time

Give each practice session one job. Pick a question, answer out loud and make one change you can hear in the next attempt.

Choose a skill you can observe

“Be more confident” is difficult to practise directly. “State my point in the first sentence” is something you can hear in a recording. Choose one goal for each rehearsal. Other useful goals include explaining your reasoning, making your individual contribution clear and finishing with an outcome.

Answer, review and try again

  • Pick a question connected to a responsibility in the vacancy.
  • Answer once without stopping to perfect each sentence.
  • Review the answer for your chosen goal and note one change.
  • Answer again, then try a slightly different question to test whether the improvement transfers.

Put this answer into your own words

Tell me about a time you solved a difficult problem.

  1. Choose an example from your own experience and jot down three or four reminders.
  2. Record your answer in one take. Listen for the main point, what you did and what happened.
  3. Improve the part that was hardest to follow, then say the answer again.
