The interviewer asks

Tell me about persuading someone when your first approach did not work.

The answer
A project partner rejected my proposal because it increased their team’s workload. I had focused on the benefit to our team and missed that cost. I asked them to walk me through the extra work, then changed the rollout so we handled the first stage. That made a small joint trial possible.

Before you start

How to prepare your examples and get the most from your practice.

How should I prepare for this interview?
Practise both a detailed personal story and a business case. In your story, be ready for follow-ups about the people, decisions and actions behind the result.
Are these actual McKinsey interview questions?
These are original practice prompts, informed by the public guidance linked on this page. McKinsey chooses its own questions, and the process can vary by role, location and level. Use your recruiter’s instructions for your specific interview.
Can I use examples from study or volunteering?
Yes. Pick a real situation where you made a decision, helped someone or solved a problem. Explain your own contribution and be clear about the setting.
Should I memorise the example answer?
Use it to understand the structure, then practise with your own experience. A story you know well is easier to adapt when the interviewer asks a follow-up.
How does spoken practice help?
Saying an answer out loud reveals the details you skip and the parts that run on. Bossed gives feedback so you can improve one part and try again.
How do I get started?
