Questions to ask the interviewer that help you decide

You are choosing a workplace too. Ask questions that help you understand what the job involves, how the team works and what would be expected of you.

Ask about the work you would actually do

Useful questions help you understand whether the job fits and how to succeed in it. Prepare more than you expect to ask, because some will be answered during the conversation. Choose two or three that match the person you are speaking with and the stage of the process.

Pick questions with a useful follow-up

  • What would you most like the person in this role to achieve in the first few months? Follow up: what might make that difficult?
  • How does the team decide priorities when requests compete? Follow up: could you give a recent example?
  • How do people get feedback here? Follow up: what does that look like in a normal month?
  • What are the next stages of the process, and what will each involve?
