The interviewer asks

A retailer is considering closing several stores. How would you assess the decision?

The answer
I would separate stores that lose money directly from those that support other sales or customer access. I would examine contribution after avoidable costs, likely customer movement and lease constraints. Then I would compare closure with smaller changes, such as format or hours, before recommending an option.

What to strengthen

The alternatives make the analysis useful. Choose a first hypothesis and a data request that could test it.

Match your practice to your role

Bain says interviews are customised to the role. Its guidance describes behavioural conversations, work or portfolio discussions and problem-solving assessments; case interviews are principally associated with consulting applications.

Before you start

How to prepare your examples and get the most from your practice.

How should I prepare for this interview?
Prepare a personal experience story and, for consulting roles, practise business cases. Focus on clear logic, collaboration and a recommendation someone could act on.
Are these actual Bain interview questions?
These are original practice prompts, informed by the public guidance linked on this page. Bain chooses its own questions, and the process can vary by role, location and level. Use your recruiter’s instructions for your specific interview.
Can I use examples from study or volunteering?
Yes. Pick a real situation where you made a decision, helped someone or solved a problem. Explain your own contribution and be clear about the setting.
Should I memorise the example answer?
Use it to understand the structure, then practise with your own experience. A story you know well is easier to adapt when the interviewer asks a follow-up.
How does spoken practice help?
Saying an answer out loud reveals the details you skip and the parts that run on. Bossed gives feedback so you can improve one part and try again.
How do I get started?
