Interview advice

How to answer “Why do you want to work here?”

Show why this job makes sense for you. Connect something specific about the employer to the work you enjoy and the experience you would bring.

Choose a reason you can explain

Start with the job description and the employer’s own website. Look for a responsibility, product, customer group or way of working that interests you. Then connect it to an experience or preference you can discuss honestly. Repeating the company’s values is less useful than explaining what one of those values would mean in your work.

Make the connection concrete

  • Identify one feature of the actual role, rather than a statement that fits any employer.
  • Explain why that work matters to you using an experience or a clear career direction.
  • Name a contribution you could make, without assuming you already know the team’s problems.

Put this answer into your own words

Why do you want to work here?

  1. Find one responsibility or detail about the employer that interests you.
  2. Explain out loud why it matters to you and which part of your experience connects to it.
  3. Listen back. If the answer could fit any employer, add the detail that makes this role different.
