Interview advice

Interview nerves: a practical preparation routine

Give yourself fewer things to work out on the day. Rehearse a familiar opening, prepare a few examples and check the practical details before your interview.

Reduce the number of things you need to improvise

Preparation can give you a few reliable starting points: an introduction, several examples and questions you want to ask. You do not need to anticipate every possible question. Aim to know your experiences well enough to talk about them from different angles. Start with one answer and build up to a short conversation at a pace that feels manageable.

Build familiarity in manageable steps

  • Start by answering one question alone, using three brief prompts.
  • Listen back once and choose a single useful change; avoid reviewing every small hesitation.
  • Try a short mock conversation with someone you trust or a practice tool.
  • Check the time, location or meeting link and prepare what you need the day before.

Put this answer into your own words

What would you like us to know about your experience?

  1. Choose an example from your own experience and jot down three or four reminders.
  2. Record your answer in one take. Listen for the main point, what you did and what happened.
  3. Improve the part that was hardest to follow, then say the answer again.
